Area doctors from varying cultural backgrounds worked together to overcome physical barriers to provide local residents and first responders with tetanus vaccinations desperately needed following Hurricane Harvey’s historic flooding.
Toxins swirled in the murky floodwaters Southeast Texans waded through to get to rescue boats during the storm and to muck out homes after the natural disaster. Rusty nails protruding from exposed beams continue to pose a danger. Tetanus vaccinations were in short supply in Harvey’s aftermath, and local physician Dr. Qamar Arfeen, who has been providing free vaccinations to local emergency staff and civilians, needed more to keep up with the high demand.
But when the vaccination supply was at its lowest, generosity was at its highest. Volunteers from the Cajun Navy who had swept into the area to rescue citizens trapped by perilous floodwaters then went above and beyond by assisting with relief supplies, like the vitally important tetanus vaccinations
When the Cajun Navy heard tetanus vaccinations were needed, they leapt into action. With one phone call, Cajun Navy volunteer Michelle Uí Cheallaigh was able to quickly facilitate a private donation of 310 tetanus vaccinations from Dr. Suneel Chilikuri, an Indian dermatologist of Refresh Dermatology in Houston. Dr. Chilikuri generously paid out of his own pocket for 310 tetanus vaccinations that were critically needed in Hurricane Harvey’s aftermath, sending them to Dr. Arfeen, who is Pakistani.
Cheallaigh and the Cajun Navy coordinated the secure transport of the donated vaccinations to Southeast Texas where Dr. Arfeen’s local Diagnostic Group clinics were able to administer the shots to residents of Southeast Texas free of charge.
Dr. Garrett Peel, CEO of Beaumont’s Previty Clinic for Surgical Care and a Texas native, coordinated the efforts between the Cajun Navy and Diagnostic Group and was a key player in getting the desperately needed vaccinations to the Beaumont area.
With the majority of medical facilities and hospitals closed in the days following the catastrophic flooding Harvey brought to Southeast Texas, Arfeen and staff saw an increased need for medical service in the area. Although some of the staff were impacted by the flooding, the Diagnostic Group team worked tirelessly to meet the medical needs of Southeast Texans and opened two clinics, one in Silsbee and one in Beaumont, on Labor Day weekend to see non-critical patients regardless of their ability to pay or insurance coverage, as well as to administer the much-needed tetanus vaccinations.
In the week following the storm, all Diagnostic Group locations opened and were fully functional, continuing to administer thousands of free tetanus vaccinations to all comers. Diagnostic Group teamed up with Harbor Hospice and Harbor Home Health, and even set up a satellite location at the Pinewood Fire Station in Hardin County.
Local residents, who showed up in droves to receive the tetanus vaccinations offered by the culturally diverse group of doctors, were witness to a prime example of different faiths and backgrounds coming together in a time of crisis for the greater good of their communities.
Dr. Arfeen sent heartfelt thanks. - “Thank you to everyone who made this possible,” said Arfeen. “We are honored to be able to serve Southeast Texas during these tough times. No words can express the gratitude we have for our first responders, city officials, volunteers, doctors, nurses and everyone who went above and beyond to help our community that has been devastated by this storm."

In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, Diagnostic Group worked around the clock on Labor Day weekend to open two clinics in SETX. Our Beaumont and Silsbee Clinics were open Saturday, September 2nd through Monday, September 4th from 9am – 4pm each day. With the help of their dedicated staff, our hardworking Physicians and Nurse Practitioners were able to assess and treat the needs of hundreds of non-critical patients in the area, regardless of their payment or insurance situations. Among the many medications that were flown in by the Cajun Navy, Diagnostic Group was able to distribute much needed tetanus shots, diabetes medications including insulin and supplies, anti-hypertensives and inhalers, as well as several wheelchairs and nebulizers. Despite the flooding, road conditions, and personal damages, we were overwhelmed by the 24 hour support, volunteering, and efforts of our amazing staff.
As we receive them, we will continue to administer tetanus shots to walk-in patients, free of charge. To ensure that we have the shots available, please call 409-813-1677.

We pray that we all get through this safely and OK."
In the event of bad weather Diagnostic Group, founded by Dr. Qamar Arfeen, would like to remind to stay safe and be prepared. To help protect your family, homes, and businesses during hurricane events, here are some tips provided by the Department of Public Safety:
* During extreme winds, board up doors and windows with plywood or install storm shutters — especially at higher elevations such as in high-rise apartments or condos
* Bring in outdoor objects that could become deadly projectiles. Think patio furniture, hanging plants, trash cans, grills, etc.
* If your home could be vulnerable to rising water, move valuables and furniture to a higher level, if possible.
* Before evacuating your home, make a final walkthrough inspection and cut off your electricity or gas supply. Downed wires and broken gas pipes could become deadly and cause serious property damage.
* Make sure boats are moored properly or moved to designated safe areas well before the hurricane nears. Do not tow a trailer or boat during high winds
* Put together an emergency supplies kit and have it ready to go. Items that should be included are water, flashlights, extra batteries, and non-perishable foods.
* When an order of evacuation has been recommended, leave. Seek shelter inland with family, friends, at a hotel or designated shelter. Notify relatives and friends of your plans.
* Discover locations of shelters along your route of evacuation in case roads become clogged.

Pulmonary Function Tests (PFT's) are noninvasive diagnostic breathing test that provide measurable feedback about the function of your lungs.
By assessing lung volumes, capacities, flow rates and gas exchange, PFT's provide information that help diagnose and treat certain lung disorders.
This procedure usually takes around 30 minutes and is performed annually to measure how lung disease is progressing and how serious the lung disease has become.
Prior to test: Don't smoke an hour before test, avoid breathing inhalers/treatment 4hours, and no heavy meals 30 minutes prior.
Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a program which helps to improve the well-being of people who have chronic (ongoing) breathing problems.
The program consists of breathing exercises and physical exercise training. A 6 minute walk is done at the begining and end of the pulmonary rehabilitation program to evaluate progress.
The program consists of 18 visits where the patient comes to th rehab facility 2 or 3 times a week for an hour session each time. The program consists of breathing and physical exercise.
The 6 minute walk test (6MWT) measures the distance an individual is able to walk over a total of six minutes on a hard, flat surface.

The Ultroid® Hemorrhoid Management System offers a unique solution to HD (hemorrhoidal disease). Instead of topical creams or the painful recovery of hemorrhoid surgery, the Ultroid® System is a quick, easy, and painless solution for HD.
After treatment, you can expect life as usual with relief from HD symptoms, and most people return to their usual daily activities on the day of treatment. Some HD symptoms could be an indication of more serious medical conditions, so talking to your doctor is important.
The Ultroid® System is non-invasive, and therefore requires no bowel preparation and no anesthesia. The procedure only takes about 10 minutes and, though the hemorrhoid will continue to shrink for 7-10 days following the procedure, most patients report rapid relief of symptoms.
This method has been proven safe and effective for over 20 years, and does not require recovery time.
Diagnostic Group's weight loss program includes: Health consultation and goal setting sessions, Customized weight loss plans, Nutrition Management, and Weekly injections.
The program is available at all Diagnostic Group locations excluding The DG Medical Center and the DG Physical Therapy locations.
