What Is PC (Palliative Care)?
Palliative care (pronounced pal-lee-uh-tiv) is specialized medical care focused on relieving symptoms and preventing the suffering of patients, regardless of the prognosis.
It provides supportive care to the patient and their family. Supportive care is appropriate for patients in all disease stages, including those undergoing treatment for curable illnesses and those living with chronic diseases such as heart disease, lung disease and diabetes mellitus.
The goal is to improve quality of life for both the patient and family by:
- Providing relief from pain, shortness of breath, nausea & other distressing symptoms
- Offering a support system to help patients live as actively as possible
- Starting care early in the course of an illness along with other therapies intended to prolong life
